Malin became Executive Director of the Honors College in August 2012.  Dr. Pereira earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her undergraduate majors were in English and Psychology; master’s and doctorate were in English with a minor in Afro-American Studies. She came to UNC Charlotte as Assistant Professor in the Department of English, specializing in African American and American literature; was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998 and Professor in 2007, also serving as Interim Chair of the Department of Africana Studies (2006-2007) and Chair of the Department of English (2007-2012). Her books include Embodying Beauty: Twentieth-Century American Women Writers’ Aesthetics, Rita Dove’s Cosmopolitanism, and Into a Light Both Brilliant and Unseen: Conversations with Contemporary Black Poets. She has published peer-reviewed research on a wide range of authors in the African American and American literary traditions, including Toni Morrison, Sylvia Plath, Yusef Komunyakaa, Elizabeth Alexander, Cyrus Cassells, Rita Dove, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Wanda Coleman. 

Dr. Pereira is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and was elected by her peers to the Executive Committee of the Association of Departments of English (2012-2015). She is a member of the Collegium of African American Research and the Modern Language Association, and is a supporter of Cave Canem, a workshop for black poetry. Professor Pereira’s teaching has been recognized at UNC Charlotte by nominations for the Bank of America Excellence in Teaching Award and mentoring awards from the Ronald E. McNair and BEST programs. She regularly contributes to Black literary and cultural events in the community by serving on discussion panels at public forums and giving presentations.
